Fans of Rebecca Yarros’s Empyrean series has anticipated the reveal of the cover of Onyx Storm for quite some time, and finally, on July 8th, it was revealed on Today.com. Here it is:

As a capricorn, I love the modern chic feel of the black, silver, and gold mix. I love the dark feel of it over all, and this is pretty new for the Empyrean series since the last two were both gold colored.

Taking a closer look and looking at the pattern of the 3 covers, you will notice something. Fourth Wing was completely gold and bright colored. Iron Flame is slightly darker and has a more burnished gold color, with darkness moving to black on the bottom. This could symbolize a darkness creeping in throughout the story. Finally, Onyx storm is dark, with a wisp of white. I think this implies that the darkness that was hinted at in Iron Flame will be the main theme of the third book, and the conflict will be solved, which will bring in some brighter times.
